Smart Snacking

Snacking the right way can help you lose weight. Some people think skipping meals saves calories, but it can actually lead to overeating later. Breakfast and afternoon snacks are often skipped first, but skipping these can slow down weight loss.

We recommend trying an afternoon snack to complement your three other meals for improved success!

Why Have an Afternoon Snack?

Better Control

When we're too hungry before a meal, we make poor eating choices. It's hard to prepare a healthy meal when starving. A good afternoon snack with protein and fruits or veggies helps us stay in control and make better choices at dinner.

More Energy

Eating more calories earlier in the day gives us energy when we need it most and helps us burn calories through activities. An afternoon snack helps keep dinner light and prevents snacking after dinner.

SNACK = PROTEIN + VEGGIES OR FRUIT, 150-200 CALORIES

Try to eat 4x per day (breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner) to avoid getting to a point where you are starving.

Combine protein and veggies or fruit for a satisfying snack that will keep you energized between lunch and dinner.

Schedule your snack into your daily routine. Try setting an alarm on your phone to remind you.

Prepare your snacks in the evening for the next day. Make it easy for yourself to grab the prepared snack in the morning on your way out the door.

Snacking Tips

Keep Snacks Visible

Put your healthy snacks where you can see them easily. Hide high-calorie foods in containers you can't see through, and place them on high shelves, or don’t buy them at all, to avoid temptation.

Be Mindful

Treat your snack like a meal. Sit at a table and focus on what you're eating. Avoid eating while standing, driving, or watching TV to prevent overeating.

Portion Control

Use small packs of snacks, like nuts, to help you eat the right amount.
